Did you know....It is now possible to convert an existing agricultural building – barns – into homes without needing to expressly apply for planning permission.

This new class authorises change of use of a building and any land within its curtilage from use as an agricultural building to a use falling within Class C3 – dwellings. It also authorises building operations 'reasonably' necessary to convert the building to residential use. 

Converting the loft is one of the most cost-effective ways to add extra living space to a home. New rooms within the roof can benefit from sunlight for much of the day, make the most of any views, and can have tremendous character due to the interesting roof shape. 
A loft conversion typically takes four to six weeks to complete and it is usually possible to continue living in your home whilst the loft is being converted. 

Wet underfloor heating systems, in which hot water produced by your heating source is pumped through pipes laid beneath the floor surface, are often more expensive to install than electric underfloor heating systems, in which electric wires supply the heat. However, wet systems are more efficient and therefore have massively lower running costs whilst performing much better.


Permitted developments are changes and additions you can make to your home without applying to your local authority for planning permission.

If you live in a World Heritage Site, Conservation Area, National Park or an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, permitted development rights are more restricted, so some changes you might want to make to your home will need planning permission when they wouldn't if you lived elsewhere. Listed buildings are also an exception to these rights.
